Advice & tips : Whiplash advice

What is whiplash injury?

Whiplash injury occurs when the neck is suddenly thrusted forward and backwards. This can be caused by vehicle collisions or sporting accidents.
The direct result may be injury to the bone or surrounding soft tissue. Sometimes there can be secondary problems e.g. headaches or anxiety. These are called whiplash associated disorders.

What symptoms can you expect?

Most people complain of headaches and stiffness at the back of the neck.
The symptoms may start within a couple of days after the accident and will usually pass after a few days to a few weeks. Some might take longer and over 3 months to recover.

If you have a serious accident with constant severe pain in the neck it is best to go to A+E or see your GP.
This is also important if you have any of the following symptoms:
-If you experienced memory loss or periods of unconsciousness after the accident
-severe headaches, disturbed vision, pins and needles and weakness in arms
-problems with balance or walking

What can you do at home?

-Gentle exercises and neck movements have been shown to be beneficial and will help recovery.
-Pain control: Ask your GP for advice on pain medication
-Applying an ice pack wrapped in a damp towel on the neck within the first 24 hours for about 15 minutes can help to reduce swelling and inflammation.
-Local heat can be helpful in reducing pain and muscle spasm.

How can a physiotherapist help?

Chartered Physiotherapists are skilled professionals who can advise and educate you on the treatment of whiplash associated disorders.
They will be able to teach you specific exercises and give postural advice to help the recovery process.
They might use mobilizing techniques to restore normal movement and massage to decrease muscle spasm.
Treatment can also consist of methods to reduce anxiety e.g. breathing techniques.
